SDLP Foyle MLA Sinéad McLaughlin has written to the Infrastructure Minister urging him to extend the deadline on the validity of theory test certificates for learner drivers.
The Foyle MLA said: “Many people in my constituency are still finding it hugely difficult to access driving test appointments, despite often checking multiple times a day online.
“This is causing huge stress for people as the deadline of their theory test approaches.
“As the previous Infrastructure Minister, Nichola Mallon extended the deadline on the validity of theory test certificates for learner drivers in recognition of the disruption that Covid-19 caused, which was a welcome relief to many.
“However, it has become clear to me that the impact of the pandemic has not yet fully abated and the increased capacity, while welcome, has not yet met the extent of need.
“It would also be particularly unjust to force people to re-take a theory exam in the current cost-of-living crisis and many people would simply not be able to meet this bill.
“This is not the fault of the people in my constituency who are unable to book a test in time and I am concerned that they will be penalised for something that is entirely beyond their control.
“I have therefore written to the Minister to urge him to intervene and grant a further extension, as well as explore the possibility of prioritising bookings for those who are approaching the expiration date of their theory test certificate.”
