In response to Mr Durkan, the Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd stated the pandemic has had a major impact on delivery of the scheme but confirmed that works were at an advanced stage.
Various Temporary Traffic Management (TTM) measures are in place, including the implementation of a temporary 40mph speed limit which cannot be removed until the completion of the scheme later this year.
Said Mr Durkan: “I wrote to Minister O’Dowd relaying the frustrations of many constituents around continued delays with the A6 dualling scheme.
“Valid concerns were also raised about the protracted restrictions from Drumahoe to Dungiven which many people felt could potentially compromise road safety on this heavily utilised road network.
“I appreciate that the pandemic and market volatility has significantly impacted on the progress of this project.
“However, it must be recognised that a great deal of work has been done to date and I look forward to further progress of the scheme, with an envisioned completion date by the end of this year.”
Mr Durkan added: “The A6 will deliver long overdue connectivity improvements for the North West which will bring with it a wealth of opportunities.
“Of course, improving the current rail provision is also key in delivering greater connectivity.
“I hope adequate funding is provided to back the findings of the All-Island Strategic Rail Review and unleash the untapped potential of the rail network across the island.
“This will be completely transformational for the North West and will play an important role in improving the quality of life, economic activity and the environment.”
