SDLP Derry Assembly representative Sinéad McLaughlin has called on the Department for Infrastructure to introduce free public transport for blind and partially sighted people during the cost-of-living crisis.
Of the 103,296 residents of Foyle, around 2,450 people live with sight loss.
Said the Foyle MLA: “Public transport is a lifeline for many blind and partially sighted people, allowing them to access vital services, navigate society more easily and live more independent lives, including while commuting to work and travelling to meet family and friends.
“Unfortunately, more and more people are struggling to afford these essential services as they struggle to make ends meet during the cost-of-living crisis.
“I have twritten to the Department for Infrastructure to ask the Minister to consider introducing free public transport for blind and partially sighted people during the cost-of-living crisis.
“I would also encourage the Minister to ensure that high quality audio announcements are made across all services and that a consistent approach is taken to community transport provision throughout the North.
“These steps would have the potential to make a significant difference to thousands of people in Derry.
“As families and individuals everywhere struggle with rising costs, we should be doing everything possible to support people during these difficult times.”
