Mr Durkan said that in the absence of a functioning executive, every option must be explored to help those most at risk of poverty as the cost of living crisis endures.
Said the Foyle MLA: “The impact of continued energy price hikes and colossal increase of simply existing, is being felt right across our communities.
“No-one is immune and I appreciate that every household has been forced to scrutinise their finances and make difficult choices at this time.
“Sadly, the most vulnerable within society including social housing tenants will bear the brunt of the increasing costs.
“I’ve written to the Housing Executive, Radius, Clanmil and Apex asking that the consider an initiative to offer electric, gas and oil support to their tenants.
“This small but meaningful support could prevent many households from being pushed over the poverty line and in doing so would improve security of tenure for many social housing tenants, reducing the risk of homelessness.
“It is regrettable that the onus is being placed on these organisations who are currently under so much pressure. However, they are at the frontline of this emergency dealing with and helping people.
“They will be acutely aware just how essential this type of provision is right now.
“Ideally the optimal solution in supporting struggling households would be the formation of an executive to deliver bespoke support schemes for everyone.
“However, given its continued absence alternative measures must be explored including intervention from the Housing Executive and housing associations to assist people during through this emergency.”
