SDLP Foyle MLAs Sinéad McLaughlin and Mark H Durkan have welcomed the launch of Sustrans’ new Active Travel Centre in the North West Transport Hub. The two MLAs attended the launch earlier today.
Said Sinéad McLaughlin: “I was delighted to join the team for the launch of Sustrans’ new Active Travel Centre today.
“Initiatives like this are key if we are to encourage more people to choose forms of active travel and this is vitally important not just to ensure that people live longer and healthier lives, but also to meet our responsibilities in tackling the climate emergency.
“I find it very promising that the Active Travel Centre has now opened its doors and believe that it will help to make that choice more possible for people here, in turn making it easier for people across Derry to play their part in reducing emissions.
“Ultimately, this is just one part however of the much bigger jigsaw to encourage active travel to become a reality for many more of our citizens including the need for greater investment in safe, healthy and sustainable travel.”
Mark H Durkan MLA added: “I have been working on the delivery of this active travel initiative for quite some time.
“This has been a collaborative project and I must pay tribute to Sustrans, Zero Waste North West, Derry City and Strabane District Council, the Bike General, the Department for Infrastructure and all involved, for their efforts.
“This exciting provision is another step in supporting people to incorporate active travel in their daily lives.
“I hope these types of initiatives, in conjunction with other projects such as the Strathfoyle Greenway, will kick start a cultural change in how people choose to travel which will no doubt prove to be a vital cog in green recovery and building more connected, environmentally friendly communities.”
