SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan has welcomed confirmation from Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd that steps are being taken to tackle safety concerns at the junction along the Tamnaherin and Brockagh Roads.
In response to an Assembly Question tabled by Mr Durkan, Minister O’Dowd outlined that department officials will undertake feasibility study into an improvement scheme at the b118 Tamnaherin/ U1145 Brockagh Roads junction.
Said the Foyle MLA: “I’m pleased that after lobbying the local DfI Roads division and the Infrastructure Minister on the urgent need for safety measures at this treacherous junction, steps are being taken to address the matter.
“The junction based in the rural area of Eglinton area, is an accident waiting to happen in the absence of adequate road safety improvements.
“This once very rural area has experienced significant growth in recent years and with that growth comes increased traffic.
“Construction is ongoing for a primary school along the Ervey Road which will likely serve to further exacerbate the volumes of vehicles along this route.
“There is also a high number of HGVs using these roads and I understand that wheels are in motion for an updated traffic survey for Eglinton, a provision which I’ve been calling for quite some time.
“I hope this along with the planned feasibility study into a road improvement scheme will be carried out as soon as possible.
“This is one of the worst junctions in Derry and as such, requires a degree of urgency from the department.
“The feasibility study is a step in the right direction and I was pleased to also see that upon my request, a refresh of the lines at this junction has been completed which I hope will help to improve safety in the interim.
“I will continue to work to deliver protections for all road users in this area.”
