Speaking after this month’s Health and Community Committee, Cllr. Mooney said: “There have been concerns for some time now about the state of this public facility and these were only exacerbated after the Waterside half-marathon in September.
“When I visited the track last week, I was pleased to see some slight improvement and of course I welcome the allocation of any funding to ensure the completion of remedial works, but we know that this will not fix the longer-term problem.
“For those of us who use this track frequently, we know how the track has been allowed to deteriorate.
“The truth is that the track is in really bad condition and short-term solutions aren’t addressing this issue.
“We need to see a more sustainable, longer-term solution that ensures value for money for our rate-payers and a facility that works for local people.
“This issue also highlighted the issue of a need for more event spaces in the city.”
