Said Cllr Harkin: “I joined BT workers on their Derry picket line for their 8th day of strike action. They are great people who deserve to be treated fairly.
“This strike is causing a lot of disruption for customers because BT bosses are treating their workers with contempt.
“It’s unacceptable for any workers at the super-profitable British Telecom Group to be going to food banks.
“The company is pleading poverty but this couldn’t be further from the truth.
“In the last year it recorded profits of £1.3 billion. Instead of helping its workforce facing massive price hikes, company bosses handed out £761 million in shareholder dividends.
“While workers faced a real terms pay cut, BT CEO Philip Jansen was handed a 32% increase bringing his overall remuneration to £3,460,000 in 2022.
“Workers need above inflation pay rises. BT Group can well afford to pay their workers properly. BT workers deserve a real pay rise and the CWU deserves our full solidarity.
“We need to escalate strike action along with people power mobilisations to end destructive corporate profiteering that’s driving up inflation.”
