Mr Durkan, who has been working for several years to progress this issue, stated that the continued uncertainty coupled with delays in accessing treatment is causing serious emotional distress for the individuals impacted.
Speaking this Fertility Awareness week, which runs until November 4, the Foyle MLA said: “The issue of fertility and access to adequate support and treatment is a very sensitive, emotive and important issue.
“The three cycles of IVF on the NHS is one which the SDLP fought to secure as part of the New Decade, New Approach Agreement and we have pushed at Westminster, the Assembly and more recently at a council level to ensure this promise is delivered.
“Sadly, to date we have seen a new decade but the same old approach. The issue of infertility affects almost a sixth of the population, infertility support services are essential to ensure people are assisted on every step of their journey.
“This includes promoting the generally unheard voices of men in this campaign as well as fostering supportive work environments for those undergoing treatment.
“Fertility Awareness week is a chance not only to raise awareness of fertility issues but also for people to educate themselves on both their physical and mental health, during this often difficult time.
“Hopefully by being more informed, men and women will be better equipped to navigate this issue, and in the process be comforted in the knowledge that they are not alone.”
He added: “A lot of work has been done on the issue and I commend organisations like Fairness IN Fertility who have worked so hard to keep this issue on our agenda and for the support they provide to those going through the process of IVF.
“This process can be a difficult one, not only financially but also puts pressure on relationships. Many people who have been or are going through this treatment have relayed to me their feeling of failure and incompleteness.
“The detrimental impact of all this stress on people’s mental health cannot be measured but it certainly must not be understated.
“These people have been frustrated for a long time, given the nature of what they are dealing with.
“They have now had their hopes raised, and it is important that those hopes are met with action, that what was promised is implemented.
“It is crucial that the three cycles of IVF is delivered.”
