The hugely successful Channel 4 comedy show, which is also showing on Netflix, is based on her own experience of growing up in Derry during the Troubles.
The show ended after Series 3 with the arrival of the Good Friday Agreement.
Earlier this year, Derry City and Strabane District councillors voted to bestow the Freedom of the City on Ms McGee.
She is the first woman to receive the honour.
Previous recipients include Nobel laureate, John Hume, former Derry City treble-winning manager, Jim McLaughlin and, earlier this year, musician and composer Phil Coulter.
Following the vote, Ms McGee said she felt very honoured.
She tweeted: “Thank you so much. Stunned and shocked.”

Scorsese is considered one of the best movie-makers in the film industry.
Speaking at a black-tie question and answer event in Chicago, Scorsese said he was currently watching the series.
Derry and Strabane council has confirmed Ms McGee will receive her freedom honour at the city’s Guildhall next Monday afternoon, December 5.
