SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan has expressed solidarity with Royal Mail Staff and The Communications Workers Union as they begin this month’s penultimate 48-hour strike for fair pay and better working conditions.
The latest round will last until today, Thursday, December with 15, further strike action planned for Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th December.
Said the Foyle MLA: “Never mind Santa; the real figure in red behind delivering Christmas year after year is the reliable postal worker.
“Royal Mail staff are the backbone of the festive period, ensuring gifts for our loved ones arrive on time and that Christmas wishes reach their destinations.
“These unsung heroes provide this important service daily and in all weather conditions.
“Royal Mail staff provided a lifeline to many throughout the lockdown, the friendly face for many lonely and vulnerable customers. When the going got tough, they kept going.
“Postal workers have families to feed and homes to heat; they too are battling the fallout of the cost-of-living emergency.
“This strike is about delivering a decent living wage to ensure these individuals can make ends meet- in essence a basic and fundamental right.
“Respect and recognition of the role our posties play should be reflected in their wage packet.
“The SDLP fully support their fight for fair pay and working conditions.”
