May O’Neill (nee Moore) was photographed walking behind Bishop Edward Daly as he waved a white and bloodied handkerchief while people carried dying 17-year-old Jackie Duddy away after being shot by British paratroopers in Derry.
A total of 13 people were shot dead by British soldiers during a civil rights march in the city on Sunday, January 30, 1972.
A 14th person later died of their injuries.
The iconic images which feature May walking behind Bishop Daly dressed in a coat and head scarf were taken by photojournalist Fulvio Grimaldi.
At the time the late Bishop Daly was a 39-year-old curate in St Eugene’s Cathedral in the Bogside.
A family notice reads: “The death has taken place on December 16, 2022, of May O`Neill (née Moore) 96 Hollyhill Road, Strabane.
“Beloved wife of the late James, much loved mother of Teresa, James, Martin, Mary, Tam and Arthur
and sister of Michael, Patrick, Terry, Martin, Marjorie, Eileen, Delia
and the late Sean, James, Thomas, Teresa, Kevin and Joe.
“Reposing at her home on Saturday, December 17, from 4p.m.
“Funeral leaving her home on Monday, December 19, at 9.20 am for Requiem Mass in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Strabane at 10 am.
“Interment afterwards in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Derry Road.
“Deeply regretted by her sorrowing sons, daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren,
brothers, sisters and family circle.
“Sacred Heart of Jesus have mercy on her soul.
“Family time please from 11pm to 11am.
