Speaking to the club’s website today, the City boss confirmed that Mark McChrystal has assumed a new role as Professional Development Coach.
The position will see him charged with overseeing the continued development of the club’s younger contracted players and loanees, as the manager explained.
“We felt strongly that this was something that the club needed to implement, although I want to be clear that Mark remains very much a part of the first team set-up.
“We have a group of young professionals here – some of whom are still at school and don’t always get to train with the senior squad.
“This new role will give Mark, in consultation with our Academy, control of the players’ individual and collective programmes.
“We also have a number of players out on loan at present and it’s often difficult to give this process the time it needs.
“Mark’s role will also see him monitor these specific areas very closely and make sure that we stay on top of everything.
“He’s the ideal person for this position. Mark is someone that young players gravitate towards and he will be a fantastic sounding board for everyone.
“I have no doubt this will be very beneficial for the medium to long term plan of the club.’’
McChrystal has a wealth of experience in the game and said he was excited to be taking on the new role.
“It’s something I’m genuinely looking forward to; in fact I’ve already started the work.
“I’ve had quite a few roles over the last number of years at Derry City, but this one is definitely different. It will be busy, that’s for sure, but I’m happy with that.
“We have a number of young contracted players now and with school and other commitments, they don’t get much chance to train with the senior squad.
“My job is to ensure that there is a clear pathway for these lads between the Academy and the senior squad.
“I’ll also be on the road to look after our players who are currently out on loan. It’s important that we monitor their progress but also ensure that we provide a proper support network as well.
“It’s something the club needs and I’m confident that it will benefit everyone in the long run.”
Manager Higgins also announced that Conor Loughrey will become first team coach with Gerard Boyle stepping into the Opposition Analyst role.
Former Glentoran and Crusaders player Michael Dougherty will replace Declan McIntyre as the club’s goalkeeping coach.
Paying tribute to the Donegal man, Ruadhri Higgins said that the outgoing coach had made a real contribution to the Brandywell club.
“I’d like to thank Declan (McIntyre) for his service over a long period of time. He has always been well regarded by players and staff and we wish him every success going forward.”
