A book of condolence has been opened in Derry for victims of the earthquake in Syria and Turkey.
A 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck on Monday devastated wide areas of the two countries, killing thousands of people.
The book was opened by Derry City and Strabane Mayor Sandra Duffy at the Guildhall on Wednesday.
In a social media post, Mayor Sandra Duffy said: “I have opened a Book of Condolence at the Guildhall today for the victims of the Earthquake in Turkey & Syria.
“My thoughts & prayers are with all those who have lost loved ones or who are waiting on news of family members who are missing.
“It is an opportunity for us to show our support & express sympathy.
“It’s heartbreaking.”
The first of the earthquakes registered a magnitude of 7.8 and struck in the early hours of the morning while people were asleep, while the second registered 7.5 and struck at around 1.30pm local time.
More than 11,200 people have now been confirmed dead, with thousands more injured and missing.
Rescuers are racing to save people trapped in the rubble of collapsed buildings.
Millions of people across Turkey, Syria, Lebanon and Cyprus felt the impact of the earthquakes.
SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood paid tribute to those who still need aid in a social media post.
He said: “Thinking of those in Türkiye and Syria still trapped under rubble and the rescuers who are working around the clock to save them.”
