Said Ms. McLaughlin: “I have been contacted directly by many parents who are really frustrated at the use of family bays in supermarket car parks by individuals without children and I’ve also heard from people with disabilities who have been similarly prevented from using disability bays.
“When it comes to family bays, many of us know the challenges that come with manoeuvring young children, and all that comes with them, in and out of the car and it’s easy to understand how frustrating it is for parents when these bays are occupied.
“If people are using up these parking spaces without having children, they are causing additional and unnecessary difficulties for young families.
“I know that many parents will also be really concerned about the safety of children, considering the dangers of crossing the car park with trolleys or double prams and indeed, I’ve heard parents say that this is just an accident waiting to happen.
“I can also imagine the frustration caused when disability bays are used by those who do not need them or are entitled to them.
“This is a really important accessibility measure and people in our community with disabilities should be able to expect that they are available.
“I would urge everyone to be mindful of this and make sure these bays remain available for those who need them.
“I would also urge the local supermarkets to enforce the rules on these bays and will be writing to the local supermarkets on this.”
