Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor Sandra Duffy, has expressed her sympathy and solidarity to family and friends of Brianna Ghey at a candlelit vigil in Guildhall Square.
The first citizen joined hundreds of local people and members of the trans and nonbinary community at the event to commemorate the schoolgirl who was killed in a park in Warrington last weekend.
Detectives in Cheshire are considering whether the death of the transgender girl was a hate crime.
“I am proud that local people have had the chance to express their sadness and support for Brianna’s family and our transgender community,” she said.
“Brianna was a beautiful young girl with her whole life ahead of her and I was heartbroken to learn of her tragic death at the weekend.
“My thoughts are with her family and friends who are experiencing unimaginable grief at this time and I want our trans and nonbinary community to know that you are valued members of our community and we stand in solidarity with you.”
A minute’s silence was held at the event which was organised by the Rainbow Project.
