Mr Byrne also said the wife and son of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell have been left badly affected by the New IRA murder bid.
DCI Caldwell has been a police officer for 26 years, with most of his service in CID and the PSNI’s Major Investigation Team.
Police have revealed that two gunmen shot the 48-year-old multiple times as he was putting footballs into his car in Omagh on Wednesday, February 22, around 8 pm.
A fourth man, believed to be a member of the New IRA’s political wing, Saoradh, was arrested over the attempted murder on Friday morning.
The 22-year-old was arrested in the Coalisland area under Section 41 the Terrorism Act.
He is currently being quizzed at Musgrave Serious Crime Suite.
Three men – aged 38, 45, and 47 – who were arrested in Omagh and Coalisland on Thursday morning during dawn raids – remain in custody.
Mr Byrne provided an update alongside leaders from Northern Ireland’s five main parties on Friday.
Political leaders from Sinn Fein, DUP, SDLP, UUP and Alliance presented a united front with the chief constable.Mr Byrne said this was a significant show of solidarity that showed the “sheer sense of outrage at this pointless and senseless attack”.
DCI Caldwell had been coaching a youth football team on Wednesday when dissident gunmen struck out of the shadows near a sports complex in Omagh.
Following the murder bid, all police officers have been advised to review their personal security while off duty.
