Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan and Moor candidate, Dermott Henderson, have requested a site meeting at the new housing development with DfI Roads officials to assess the current situation and impact increased traffic is having on the surrounding rural road network.
Said Mr Durkan: “I’ve been contacted constituents from Creggan worried about the potential increase in traffic as a result of new housing development, Creevagh Heights.
“Nearby Creggan Heights is already heavily congested with parked vehicles and often only one car can pass through at a time. The new housing development will likely increase the volume of traffic in the area, impacting the surrounding roads at Blighs Lane and Holyhall Road.
“Road safety and in particular the speed at which traffic travels along these routes was already an issue but one that will be exacerbated as a result of the new development.
Given that Creevagh Heights will be home to many young families, I also have serious concerns for the safety of children playing in the area.
“The implementation of road safety measures including speed reduction above the development is absolutely necessary.”
SDLP Moor candidate, Dermott Henderson, added: “Lorries and tractors tend to use this road network on a regular basis and the junction from Springhill Road leading onto Sheriffs Mountain is particularly dangerous.
“Lorries travelling along these narrow roads often render the road near impassable for other road users.
“Some form of traffic calming at this junction is needed. We’ve requested a site meeting with DfI Roads and hope all options to improve road safety will be explored.”
