SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan has slammed a decision by the Department of Education to give parents a single day’s notice of their intention not to extend the School Holiday Food Grants over the Easter Break.
Said the Foyle MLA: “After months of chasing a response from the Department of Education, I’m disappointed to learn that School Meal Payments will not be made over the Easter Holiday.
“The decision to scrap the scheme is absolutely outrageous. To do so with a single day’s notice to principals, staff and the parents that rely on them is totally unforgivable.
“Many constituents have been in contact with my office over the past few weeks seeking clarity on this scheme and I know some families were relying on these payments.
“I understand the challenging financial position that the Department of Education is in but what about the financial situation facing thousands of families?
“The initiative to fight holiday hunger was instigated in response to the pandemic however given the dire, arguably worse off financial position so many households now find themselves, these payments are needed now more than ever.
“Cutting holiday hunger payments right before the Easter break will be devastating for low-income families across the North.
“How many more casualties must it take for DUP to go back into government? These are the real life consequences of political failure.”
