SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan has welcomed progress to redevelop the Fort George site but has expressed reservations about regeneration proposals which will see the site become the location of a new Health and Care Centre in Derry.
It follows confirmation from the Department for Communities that the disposal of 1.7 acres of the Fort George site is now in the ownership of the Western Health & Social Care Trust.
Said the Foyle MLA: “In terms of the health model this project is welcome and it would be foolish not to see the merit in a new health hub, particularly in the current climate, however Fort George is perhaps not the most suitable location.
“My reservations around these proposals are on record and it is concerning that there has been no exploration of alternative use of the site.
“I would’ve liked to have seen more ambitious plans for this strategically important development site which would be better utilised for something that adds real value economically to the city and beyond.
“Sadly, this falls short of earlier proposals and could be seen as a reduction in terms of ambition.
“That said, a state-of-the-art facility will, I hope, alleviate some of the pressure currently plaguing the health service.
“My concerns now would be the recruitment and retention of medical professionals to run the health hub.”
