People Before Profit Faughan representative Damian Gallagher has said the people of Eglinton are “fed up” waiting for action to be taken to reduce the number of HGV vehicles travelling through the village.
Gallagher claims to be inundated with complaints in regard to the issue.
“Over and over again I am contacted by Eglinton residents who are beyond tired of waiting for action to be taken in relation to Eglinton village being used as a short cut by HGV drivers going to Foyle Port.
“This is a two-decade old problem. No one should have to wait that long for action to be taken.
“Road service have said that they are investigating potential traffic calming measures but that will not stop the lorries, it will be highly expensive to implement and will not happen any time soon.”
With the current lack of Government in Stormont there is no Department of Infrastructure Minister in place, Mr Gallagher has said that he has written to the Permanent Secretary at the DFI in regard to the matter.
“I have asked the DFI to implement a weight restriction on the B118 road to stop the constant flow of HGVs through Eglinton village (with exemptions for lorries servicing local amenities etc).
“A weight restriction on the road would finally provide peace and quiet to residents and would be a much cheaper solution than expensive traffic calming measures.
“This issue needs put to bed once and for all,” he added.
