SDLP Waterside Councillor Martin Reilly has condemned those responsible for a fire at Rossdowney House.

Police at treating the fire as an arson attack on the building which is owned by the Western Trust.

Said Cllr Reilly: “I would like to utterly condemn those responsible for this fire, which will be the cause of grave concern for everyone in the local community.

“Facilities like those at Melrose Day Centre provide such an important opportunity for vulnerable people to engage with others in a routine way and participate in activities, including in the art therapy room which has been entirely ruined by this disturbing incident.

“I have no doubt that the service users and their families will be very distressed by this alarming event and my thoughts are first and foremost with them.

“It is even more worrying that this represents the second such fire to have taken place in recent weeks.

“I would urge anyone with information to come forward to the police and assist them with their enquiries.”
