The SDLP has welcomed confirmation from the Department for Infrastructure Roads team that double yellow lines will be extended along the Duncreggan Road in an effort to address parking issues.
The move follows an assessment of the entrance to the Student Village secured by Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan. Mr McCallion has also engaged with Magee University in advance of the Foyle Cup in July to tackle on street parking.
SDLP Foyleside candidate Stephen McCallion said: “Residents have waited years to see action on parking issues along this route near Magee University campus, which have been a huge source of frustration.
“It’s clear that parking is causing a great deal of disruption for residents, motorists and pedestrians alike.
“Following an assessment of roadside parking at the entrance to the Student Village DfI Roads has agreed to our proposal for an extension to the double yellow line provision.
“The proposed extension is to the right of the entrance as the motorist exits from the Student Village and I can confirm that the process to make the necessary legislation has started.
“This is a problem which the SDLP has been working hard to resolve for quite some time.
“I’m pleased to finally see steps being made to tackle the situation and hope the installation of double yellow line will deter motorists from parking and help address longstanding safety concerns.
“I’ve also been liaising with Magee University who have confirmed that their overspill carpark is free of charge after 6pm and I would encourage motorists to avail of this facility in the evenings.
“As we approach the Foyle Cup season, I remain hopeful that the university will consider my proposal to permit the free use of their carpark facility for the entirety of that week.
“I’ve also raised the potential reduction of car parking fees for students to reduce the number of vehicles parking along the Duncreggan Road during the week and will continue to push for a residents’ parking scheme for the area.”
