Following the publication of the Northern Ireland Housing Bulletin January – March 2023, which showed that 5,736 people and families in Derry are on the housing waiting list and 4,275 in housing stress, SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood has called for an immediate return of the DUP to the Stormont Executive to address this crisis.
Said the Foyle MP: “Recent figures show that 5,736 people in Derry and Strabane are on the housing waiting list, with 4,275 people under housing stress.
“These figures are alarming but come as no surprise to those of us who help people daily with housing issues.
“These are not simply numbers on a screen, these are actual people and families in desperate need of somewhere to live and call home, and this crisis demands immediate and decisive action.
“People and families in Derry are languishing on the housing waiting list, some living in unsuitable conditions with their families.
“People need adequate housing as a right and should not be forced, in some cases, to wait for a shockingly long period of time before being properly housed.
“This issue rests squarely on the shoulders of political failure and should be a wake-up call to the DUP to get back into Stormont and work with others to address this crisis.
“People and families deserve respect and dignity and can’t afford to wait much longer for action.”
