Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell was shot several times by two gunmen in the carpark of a sports complex in Omagh as he put footballs into the boot of his car after a training session involving his son.
In a statement, the PSNI said two men aged 28, and five men aged 33, 38, 45, 47 and 72, have been charged with attempted murder.
Two of the men, aged 38 and 45, have also been charged with membership of a proscribed organisation, namely the IRA.
Three of the men, aged 28, 33 and 47, have also been charged with preparation of terrorist acts.
All seven men are expected to appear before Dungannon Magistrates’ Court via video link on Monday, May 29, for a first remand hearing.
The men were among 11 people arrested on Friday during a series of dawn raids on homes in Omagh and Coalisland as part of the murder bid investigation.
Four other people have been released pending a report to the Public Prosecution Service.
Two men, aged 34 and 21, and two women, aged 52 and 34, were arrested under section 41 of the Terrorism Act.
