Mr Eastwood spoke to Tánaiste Micheál Martin today and underscored the SDLP’s commitment to forming a constructive Opposition at Stormont.
The SDLP Leader urged political leaders not to allow the work of restoring the Executive to be placed on the back burner over the summer while public services face unprecedented pressure.
Said the Foyle MP: “Restoring the Executive to provide strategic political direction to public services must be an urgent priority for all parties.
“The unprecedented pressure on health, education and other critical services is leading to savage cuts that will have a dire impact on people across our communities.
“We all know that the Executive is not a silver bullet but to stand by and do nothing while service collapse is an unforgivable abdication of responsibility.
“The enormous pressure facing striking workers, people waiting on hospital treatment and working families will not ease over the summer.
“Neither can the effort to get politicians back to work. This cannot go on the back burner for the next few months.
“The SDLP is committed to providing constructive opposition at Stormont.
“Our vision to end division and build a new Ireland is needed in the politics of this place right now.”
