A controversial bonfire in Derry’s Bogside will not be next month.
The bonfire is built annually at Meenan Square on August 15 to mark the anniversary of internment.
In a statement on Twitter, Republican Socialist Youth Movement (RSYM) said: “In the last few months the RSYM have been engaging with the Bogside Republican Youth regarding the highly attended annual bonfire in Meenan Square.
“After several conversations with the bonfire builders they have informed us that after discussions with the local residents they have made the decision not to have their bonfire due to young people from outside the area fighting and causing antisocial behaviour last year.
“The builders of the fire understand and respect the concerns of the community and this is why this decision has been made.
“We commend the decision of the Bogside Republican Youth and the bonfire builders to put the community first.”
The decision has been welcomed.
Reacting to the tweet, oner person said: “Great news. Well done to everyone involved in bringing this about.”
Another tweeted: “Well done folks 👏
“Let’s hope it can be replaced with some positive events that can be enjoyed by all the families of the Bogside.
“Plenty of real culture to celebrate and plenty of good people to drive it. All the best 👏”
Last year police on patrol in the area came under attack from automatic gunfire.
The New IRA in Derry later claimed responsibility for the attack.
In a statement, the dissident republican terror group claimed that they had fired two AK47s at a police patrol.
Sources said the Chinese AK47s were acquired by the group in the run up to the bonfire, which had lost almost all its existing weaponry in intelligence-led raids by the security forces.
Four men were arrested for questioning over the gun attack and later released without charge.
