Stormont officials have said “preliminary work” has been carried out on proposals to add the word ‘Derry’ to road signs alongside ‘Londonderry’.
A year ago it was confirmed a “dual-naming” policy for road signage was being worked on by the Department for Infrastructure.
It followed an MLA asking DfI to consider including ‘Derry’ alongside ‘Londonderry’ on A6 road signage.
A DfI spokeswoman said in an update: “The department has undertaken some preliminary work on the naming convention used on traffic signs.
“When completed the findings will be presented to an incoming minister.”
Former Sinn Féin Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd last year said officials had been asked to “review the current approach with a view to moving to one that accommodates dual naming on traffic signs across the network”.
It emerged after SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan proposed the change for the A6, saying it would be an “inclusive” way of “accommodating both traditions”.
He said it would assist tourists visiting Derry and “put an end to the constant defacing of the existing signs”.
