O’Neill: McDonald’s workers should unionise

A recent BBC investigation has discovered an alleged toxic culture of sexual assault, harassment, racism and bullying in more than 100 current and recent UK staff at outlets of the fast-food chain McDonald’s.

Over a five-month period, BBC journalists were told of more than 100 allegations from employees they spoke to, 31 related to sexual assault, and 78 related to sexual harassment.

They also heard 18 allegations of racism, while six people made allegations of homophobia.

People Before Profit representative Maeve O’Neill has condemned the US fast food company;

“These stories of harassment, bullying and assault across the network of McDonald’s restaurants are truly horrendous.

“The company’s failure to do anything about them is unfortunately no surprise.

“Every worker should be safe at their work and never be subjected to sexual or physical harassment.”

The PBP rep claims that the conditions of these workers would be improved greatly if they were to join a trade union.

“McDonald’s is only interested in their profits.

“They will do as little as possible to protect their staff.

“That’s why it is so important for workers to unite and be part of the trade union movement.

“Unions protect workers. Huge corporations exploit workers, it’s that simple.

“It’s clear workers at McDonald’s need trade union representation.”
