‘Place 10X’ aims to set the framework for a sub-regional approach to the delivery of 10X, the Department’s economic vision which outlines a number of objectives for the North’s economy by 2030.
Said the Foyle MLA: “I was pleased to have the opportunity to meet with senior officials from the Department and outline the SDLP’s position in relation to the new Place10X Strategy.
“It is welcome that after many years, the Department is finally starting to set out its approach to tackling this significant challenge.
“However, I was also keen to make clear to the Department that any place-based approach to the economic vision of Northern Ireland must deliver for the North-West, which has been left behind for far too long.
“Specific interventions are needed here if we are to build on our strengths and realise the investment needed to truly establish the North-West as a thriving cross-border region, with Derry as its capital.
“I also outlined the need for the reform of Invest NI to proceed without delay and stressed the need for specific and measurable targets for the organisation when it comes to addressing sub-regional imbalances.
“If the plan to reform this organisation does not include targets, it will simply not be worth the paper it is printed on.
“The plan must also include a fully staffed office in the North-West, including with senior figures and an enhanced approach to cross-border collaboration.
“Addressing sub-regional imbalances cannot be achieved by any one Department alone and I would encourage the Department to articulate clearly how it will work with other government Departments to make the kind of cross-government interventions that are needed.
“I look forward to further consultation on this strategy and will continue to hold the Department and its Arms-Length Bodies accountable until our city is finally afforded the economic justice that we deserve.”
