The man, aged 46, has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
He is expected to appear before Derry Magistrates’ Court in Bishop Street on Friday, September 22, for a first remand hearing.
As is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
It is understood the attack was carried out by a loyalist bandsman from outside the city who was attending an Apprentice Boys of Derry parade in the city.
Reports at the time said the shopkeeper had told the middle-aged loyalist bandsman to desist from urinating at the rear of his premises when the attack happened.
A daughter of the man said her dad was “left covered in blood after being kicked to the head” in the unprovoked attack.
