Councillors gave approval for a new covered standing terrace and improved facilities at the ground on Wednesday.
Said the Foyle MP: “The Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium has played host to great teams from around the world, had many big European nights and is packed for every home match Derry City play.
“There has been a real need to expand the stadium for some time and I welcome today’s recommendation of planning approval for the new stand and improved facilities at the Brandywell, enhancing the home of football in our city.
“We need clarity on where the funding for this work is going to come from.
“Derry City has been waiting far too long on the Sub-Regional Stadia project funding to be provided to council.
“Due to the DUP refusing to go into government and previous inaction from the Sinn Féin Minister on the scheme, we have no idea when this money will materialise.
“The SDLP remain committed to helping resolve these challenges, seeking solutions that benefit the people of Derry.
“We need to build a Brandywell that meets the needs of our club to allow it to reach its full potential on and off the pitch, and to offer a modern match-going experience to football fans in this city.”
