Said the Foyle MLA: “Delighted that funding has been allocated for necessary maintenance works throughout our cemeteries.
“It follows concerns which I raised on the behalf of constituents about the current state of some graveyards, especially the City Cemetery.
“Many have complained about the number of large potholes littered predominantly at the top, older part of the cemetery as well as the general unkempt nature of some areas which have become overgrown with weeds.
“I’ve been advised that weed removal and maintenance of grass areas has begun this week. It’s hoped that this work will be completed by the end of November.
“The funding allocation will allow for essential remedial works of the road infrastructure however the scope of these works will be clarified once the tender process is completed.”
Mr Durkan added: “Last month I also raised safety concerns relating to the visibility at the Lone Moor exit of the City Cemetery, Council have conducted a health and safety assessment of the entrance and have agreed to liaise with DfI Roads to conduct a further traffic assessment to help improve the overall safety for road users.
“This is an extremely busy and often dangerous road, I’m hopeful that steps will be taken to make this area safer.
“I look forward to the completion of these necessary works to improve safety and experience at our cemeteries for anyone visiting the resting place of their loved ones.
“I will continue to liaise with both Council and DfI to ensure these plans are delivered.”
