SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood has sought an urgent update from the British Government and Department for Infrastructure on the current status of the A6 Phase 2 at Drumahoe.
The project has encountered a number of delays with a lack of clarity on when the road will be finished.
Said the Foyle MP: “Residents in Drumahoe and the surrounding area have contacted me about the ongoing saga with the A6 and phase 2, which specifically affects Drumahoe.
“It has been years since this project began and people are rightly asking for clarity on the future of this work and when we can expect it to be completed.
“With the ongoing traffic congestion and possible air pollution, many people are rightly concerned that this stage of the A6 has been shelved indefinitely because of the lack of an Executive in Stormont with no budget to complete the project, leaving residents in the area in limbo.
“This road is vitally important to this area to improve the quality of the road, increase road safety and boost our transport links and it cannot be allowed to falter due to political instability.
“I have contacted the Northern Ireland Secretary of State and the Permanent Secretary in the Department for Infrastructure for an urgent update and to ask what steps they are taking to ensure this project is completed as soon as possible.
“We need to see this work carried out and people in this area won’t tolerate any more excuses.”
