Cars found with serious defects in Derry road safety operation

The PSNI say six cars have been put off the roads in Derry after they were found not safe to be driven.

Police Derry City and Strabane say: “These photos show what inspections uncovered during a road safety operation at the weekend in the city involving officers from Foyleside and The Moor Neighbourhood Policing Team and the Driver & Vehicle Agency.

“Inspection of some of the vehicles saw tyres not fit-for-purpose, defective parts and even a broken subframe, some of which are pictured.

“In total, fifteen drivers were spoken to and had their vehicles examined.

“Prohibition notices were issued to six drivers.

“This means they are off the road until any faults detected are rectified. Approximately, 15 Fixed Penalty Notices, both endorsable and non-endorsable, were issued to drivers for detections around detective tyres and brakes, illegal modifications and excessive window tint.

“Officers will continue to focus efforts on keeping the roads safe in the Derry City & Strabane area over the coming weeks and months.

“We would urge anyone taking a vehicle onto the road to ensure it is roadworthy and do all they can to keep themselves and other road users safe.

“Staying safe on the roads is everyone’s responsibility.”
