Detective Inspector Phelan from the PSNI’s Paramilitary Crime Task Force said: “Officers travelling in the vicinity of the Foyle Bridge on Wednesday afternoon, 20th December had reason to stop and search a van also travelling on the bridge.
“As a result of the search, a number of items including a mobile phone and suspected Class A controlled drugs were seized from the vehicle.
“Two men, aged 46 and 43, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of possession of a Class A controlled drug and possession of a Class A controlled drug with intent to supply.
“The 46-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of driving while disqualified.”
UPDATE 8.55 AM: The 43 year old man has now been charged with possession of a Class A controlled drug and possession of a Class A Controlled drug with intent to supply.
The 46 year old man has been charged with possession of a Class A controlled drug, possession of a Class A Controlled drug with intent to supply and various motoring related offences.
Both men are due to appear at Derry Magistrates’ Court today, Thursday, December 21, for a first remand hearing.
As is normal procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
Added DI Phelan: “Drug supply and misuse is a vicious cycle that we need to collectively break, and we all have a part to play.
“Our investigation is continuing and I would encourage anyone with information about the supply or use of illegal drugs to contact police on 101.”
