Derry courtroom can’t hold jury trials after £250k upgrade

Bishop Street courthouse in Derry where Court Room 4 can’t be use after £250k ventilation upgrade

A courtroom at Derry’s court on Bishop Street can’t be used for jury trials because of “acoustic issues” which emerged after a £250,000 building upgrade.

BBC News NI reports the issues are due to a ventilation system fitted in 2018.

The result is jury trials are being heard in a smaller but older courtroom.

Crown Court cases only returned to the city in September.

They were moved to Coleraine Courthouse during the Covid pandemic because of social distancing rules and courtroom mitigations.

The Department of Justice told BBC News NI that jury trials are not being heard in Courtroom Four because of the sound issues.

A spokesperson said “acoustic issues” in the courtroom could potentially cause difficulties for participants.

They said that while jury trials are not being heard in the courtroom at present, it remains open for other court business.

They also confirmed that the acoustic issues are being addressed and it is planned that Crown Court jury trials will return to Court Four in the new year.
