Jim McFadden murder: Convicted killer James Meehan back behind bars

Killer on the run James Meehan remanded in custody after being on the run in the Republic

A convicted killer who was on the run for 14 months has been returned to jail after being extradited from the Republic earlier today.

James Meehan, 54, was convicted in 2009 for the murder of popular Derry man Jim McFadden.

Last year, while on leave from prison, Meehan left the address where he had been allowed to stay in Limavady, Co Derry.

This made him unlawfully at large and it is believed he crossed the border.

Meehan, whose address was given as Maghaberry prison, appeared before Craigavon Magistrates’ Court on Friday where he was remanded back into custody.

Meehan was charged with being unlawfully at large on October 9, 2022.

Meehan’s appearance follows extradition proceedings to bring him back to Northern Ireland.

According to legal proceedings in Dublin High Court, Meehan’s lawyers unsuccessfully applied for a stay on extradition proceedings.

Meehan had been freed in October 2022 and allowed to live at an address in Limavady, Co Derry.

However, warrants were issued for his arrest when he was found not to be there.

One of the warrants states Meehan was on temporary release which meant he was unlawfully at large.

Jim McFadden was beaten to death outside his home in 2006

Meehan had been handed a life sentence for the murder of Mr McFadden in 2007.

Mr McFadden was attacked after a wedding reception in Donegal which was also attended by Meehan.

The 42-year-old died of a ruptured heart caused from blows inflicted outside his home in Shantallow.
