The man, who is in his 40s, is in a critical condition in hospital after being hit by a Volkswagen Golf at about 1.40 am this morning, Sunday, February 12.
Sergeant Devlin said: “Around 1.40am, police received a report of a collision involving a pedestrian and a black Volkswagen Golf.
“Officers attended, along with colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service, and one man, aged in his forties, was taken to hospital for treatment to serious injuries.
“He remains in a critical condition at this time.”
Police Derry City and Strabane earlier said officers had been dealing with the collision overnight, with the Strand Road closed between Rock Road and Duncreggan Road and access to Sainsbury’s supermarket closed to the public.
In an update this afternoon, a PSNI spokesperson said: “Road users are advised that Strand Road in Derry has now reopened following an earlier road traffic collision.”
Police are appealing to anyone who has dash cam footage or witnessed anything to contact them on the 101 number.
