SDLP Infrastructure Spokesperson Mark H Durkan MLA has welcomed investment for cross border rail services between Belfast and Dublin.
The service will benefit from £141.9 million as part of the Peace Plus Programme.
Mr Durkan said the move, which will see faster journey times and utilise sustainable technology, will enhance connectivity across the island.
He added that improvements to timetabling of rail services from Derry to Dublin and vice versa is key in maximising uptake.
Said the Foyle MLA: “This investment is a huge step forward in the delivery of an all island rail network fit for the needs of a modern society, improving connectivity both North and South.
“However, it’s important that this progress does not overlook the pressing need for enhancements in rail services from Derry to Dublin and vice versa.
“At present the morning train from Derry to Belfast arrives too late for the Enterprise service on to Dublin.
“Simple timetabling tweaks are needed to accommodate passengers and I believe Translink should be exploring a direct service between the two cities.
“Previously, Translink stated there was limited demand for rail travel between Derry and Dublin but that is by no means the feedback I’ve received from constituents.
“The same rationale was rolled out as an excuse to prevent investment in the North West rail, however since the delivery of the North West Transport Hub the city now boasts one of the busiest stations in the North with record breaking passenger numbers year on year.
“If you build it they will come and it stands to reason that if we create more transport options even more passengers will use these services.
“We now need certainty around the implementation of the All Island Strategic Rail Review, an immediate update in Phase 3 Derry to Coleraine feasibility study and delivery of an hourly Sunday rail service from Derry.
“These relatively minor but essential improvements are key to ensure rail is a viable, sustainable travel option for all commuters.
“Doing so will stimulate economic growth, help achieve net zero targets and drive positive change for this historically neglected region.”
