Durkan demands answers on continued closure of dual carriageway

SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan

SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan has said that the closure of the Clooney Road dual carriageway in Derry is causing significant disruption for motorists and local people.

The city bound portion of the road was due to be closed overnight but the road remains closed and has caused problems for people making their way into and across the city.

Said the Foyle MLA: “People understand the closure of a road for essential and, in this case, overdue maintenance, and the closure of the Clooney Road dual carriageway overnight was advertised.

“However the road was due to be reopened this morning at 7am, and there was some indication in fact that it would be earlier than that if possible.

“Instead we are well into the day and the road is still closed, causing significant disruption for people making their way into Derry.

“If the road needed to be closed for longer then the Department for Infrastructure should have clearly communicated that.

“Instead we have an arterial route blocked and heavy traffic in the surrounding areas as people try to navigate the issue.

“Indeed, the majority of diverted traffic is finding itself stuck in more roadworks in the Waterside, which suggests a serious lack of planning.

“I would encourage people to expect traffic delays in the city as a result of this.

“I will remain in contact with the Department for Infrastructure to make sure the road is reopened as quickly as possible and that the remainder of the scheduled works are carried out with minimal disruption to people.”
