Speed is one of the main causes of accidents and, sadly, unnecessary fatalities have resulted on our roads.
Families left bereft with grief at the loss of a much loved one or more.
Households left grieving for a father, mother, brother, sister, uncle, aunt and cousin no longer able to enjoy family gatherings.
Just shattered homes all because a selfish person decided that our roads resemble a Formula One grand prix track.
Well, they don’t. We all have a duty to stay within the speed limits, not only for the safety of all drivers but pedestrians and cyclists too.
As the television adverts state so bluntly, SPEED KILLS.
One driver who hasn’t heeded the ‘reduce your speed’ advertisements and will soon be in the local court over his excessive speed.
Police Derry City and Strabane say: “Road Policing Interceptors from Maydown stopped this driver on the Glenshane Road, close to Claudy recently, at 129mph.
“This was 59mph over the speed limit.
“And due to the circumstances particular to this driver, they were arrested and charged to appear at court later this month.”
