SDLP Infrastructure MLA Mark H Durkan has written to the Department for Infrastructure to assess safety concerns on the Groarty Road following several collisions in recent weeks.
Mr Durkan previously secured improvements including signage and ‘slow’ road markings which were installed last year along this rural route.
The MLA for Foyle said: “I’ve contacted DfI Roads to relay serious concerns about the safety along the Groarty Road.
“Despite safety measures which I secured in June, problems persist with at least three known collisions within the last fortnight along this stretch of road.
“The approach before the row of cottages proves a blind-spot and motorists continue to travel at significant speeds here, unable to see oncoming vehicles until the very last second.
“I’m deeply concerned that the closure of roads at Coshquin and Whitehouse will result in increased traffic flow here placing more people, including residents, at serious risk of harm.
“I’ve asked DfI Roads to consider additional measures including a reduced speed limit. Replacement signage has also been ordered for the Springtown Road junction after it was damaged in an incident last week.
“I would urge motorists to be mindful when driving this route and rural roads in general.
“Despite being classified at the national speed limit of 60mph, it doesn’t mean it’s safe to drive at this speed.
“It’s a max limit not a target – motorists should bear in mind hidden dips and junctions.
“We all have a duty to keep our roads safe.”
