Independent Councillor for Foyleside Shauna Cusack has called on The Department for Infrastructure to urgently repair and repaint the popular cycle path along Northland Road and The Branch.
Said Cllr Cusack: “This is a very popular pathway for both pedestrians, runners and cyclists which links numerous residential and commercial areas.
“It is also used by many schoolchildren on their daily walk to school. Originally a joint EU and Roads Service funded project, it has sadly been neglected and the white lines and markings either badly faded or completely invisible.
“In the interest of health and safety these markings must be reinstated immediately, especially with the increase use during the Summer months, especially if we are encouraging people to get out and get active.
“With many people wearing headphones or on their devices, it can be impossible to hear or notice oncoming cyclists, or for cyclists to warn pedestrians in their way, therefore it is important for users to know they in the correct lane to avoid any kind of collision which could lead to serious injury.
“I have called on the DFI to make these markings good and hoping to get a positive response.”
