The project delivered by the Executive Office, will comprise of housing, community hub and local amenities.
The £12 million Urban Villages project has suffered a series of set-backs but Mr Durkan said he remains hopeful that this transformational initiative can now progress at pace.
Said the Foyle MLA: “This site has been an eyesore and source of heartache for the local community for too long. People have been left frustrated by continued delays around this project.
“I’m pleased we have at last reached this stage after a few false dawns and premature proclamations from others.
“While it’s lamentable that the start date has been pushed back to Spring 2025, I’m glad there’s finally an indicative commencement date.
“I look forward to development of the site which will provide much needed social housing, a new community facility and some community units.
“It will help revitalise this historically neglected area and the construction phase will create local employment opportunities. Let’s hope the planning application can be dealt with apace.
“It’s so important that people have their say in the project and are involved in its design and delivery.
“This site belongs to the community – ensuring input from local residents will help create a space that truly reflects the needs and desires of the people it serves, fostering a sense of ownership and pride.
“I would urge residents to have their voice heard as part of the public consultation and to keep an eye out for public information events in the weeks ahead.”
