The motion called on the Communities Minister to present a plan to remove it before the end of 2024.
Councillor McDaid said: “I welcome unanimous support from my fellow councillors today for my motion calling on the Executive to remove the two-child Universal Credit limit and recognition of the harm that it causes to families across the North.
“This cruel Tory policy forces children into poverty and heaps further pressure on parents struggling to keep their heads above water.
“It’s utterly disgraceful that so many children in our city, council area and across the North are living in poverty, often going without bare necessities, including food.
“This policy totally ignores that many Universal Credit recipients are in work or experiencing real difficulties in their lives and only serves to make things harder for those in our society who deserve help the most.
“The SDLP has been fighting at all levels to see this harmful policy ditched and I particularly welcome the support of DUP councillors whose party amended and watered down a similar motion brought by the SDLP Opposition team in the Assembly, with their amendment also supported by Sinn Féin and Alliance.
“If we are going to remove this draconian policy and get families the support they need then we need all parties working together on this.”
