A 71-year-old man has faced Derry Magistrates’ Court today charged with historic firearm and explosive offences dating back almost five decades ago.

Joseph Gerard Kelly from Glenview Park in Dungiven is charged with possessing two electronic detonators and two pressure mats with intent to endanger life on February 16, 1976.

Kelly was also charged with possessing the items in suspicious circumstances on the same date.

He also faces two firearm charges including possessing two Walther pistols, a Browning pistol, a. 22 rifle, a Remington shotgun and ammunition with intent to endanger life on February 16, 1976.

He also faced a charge of possessing the items in suspicious circumstances.

Defence solicitor Seamus Quigley told the court Kelly was arrested this morning on foot of a bench warrant which had been two months ago.

Saying the defendant had been living openly at his home for the past 20 years, Mr Quigley said bail had been agreed with a detective from the PSNI’s Legacy Investigation Branch who had brought the charges.

Released on £500 bail, Kelly must surrender any passport he holds, reside his address at Glenview Park in Dungiven and sign his bail every Friday at the police station in Limavady.

The defendant’s next court appearance is on Wednesday, July 10.

Earlier today, the PSNI said a decision to prosecute the man was issued by Northern Ireland’s Public Prosecution Service ahead to the commencement of the Northern Ireland (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act 2023 which came into force on Wednesday, May 1.
