Isaac Roxborough was riding the quad bike which was involved in a single-vehicle collision on the Ballygudden outside Eglinton village on Tuesday.
The 14-year-old passed away in hospital earlier this week.
The PSNI say it has now started a “meticulous investigation to establish the circumstances” around the incident.
Isaac, who was from Burnfoot in Dungiven, was fondly remembered by Rev Mark Loney of Bovevagh Church of Ireland, who was speaking to the teen just three days before he died.
“On Sunday we had a special service at the church with an ice cream van all for the kids and Isaac was there,” said Rev Loney.
“He was operating the church PowerPoint screen for us, that’s what he did, he was just always very helpful around the church.
“When I was speaking to him last weekend, I never thought that three days later he would be gone,” he added.
“It’s just unbelievable.”
The Roxborough family, he said, were well-known in the area and were parishioners of Bovevagh for many years.
“I remember Isaac was confirmed in the church only a few years ago, as was his older brother Adam before him and I also baptised the youngest son James,” he said.
“Isaac was a very unassuming young man, very helpful around the church and never refused any requests for help.
“He was always very practical, and he loved farming, that was another great passion of his,” he added.
“If there were things ever needing done or sorted out Isaac never refused to help if you needed it; he had a great work ethic especially if it was to do with outdoors or farming, he was just in his element there.”
Rev Loney added that the family were “very close” and “did everything together”.
“The family themselves are well-known in the area and I’d imagine it would be a big funeral.”
On Wednesday evening Rev Loney held a prayer meeting at the Dungiven church.
“About 18 people turned up for the meeting, it was very emotional, and it’s been very hard to get our heads around, for everybody,” he said.
“The whole community is just devastated by what’s happened, it’s just horrendous.
“People are just lost for words. What can you really say?”
Newtowne Football Club, where Isaac played, said: “It is with great sadness and regret that we have learned of the tragic passing of our ex-player Isaac Roxborough.
“Isaac had been part of Newtowne Youths football club for several years, playing regularly at 7, 9, and 11 a side. He always had a smile on his face, as can be seen in the photo, irrespective of the result. He gave his all in every match he played.
“Newtowne Youths would like to pass on all of our condolences to his parents, Mark and Katrina, his brothers Adam and James, and to the whole family circle. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very sad time.”
