David Montieth (36), from St Columb’s Wells, Derry, appeared at the city’s magistrates’ court in Bishop Street today, Thursday, July 11, charged with riot and disorderly behaviour.
He is also charged with causing criminal damage to a police Land Rover.
The charges relate to disorder in Creggan on Tuesday, July 9.
Opposing bail, a police officer told the court he could connect the accused, who has 75 previous convictions, to the charges.
Police had been in the Southway area of Creggan on Tuesday dealing with a security alert, the court was told.
The police officer said that during the disturbances, officers identified Monteith and watched him throwing masonry at police.
It is alleged that at one stage the accused stood in front of a police Land Rover and damaged it.
He was chased by officers, caught and arrested.
It is claimed Monteith made “some admissions” during police interview.
Opposing bail due to the risk of reoffending, the officer added that Monteith is currently on bail facing other charges.
The deputy district judge refused releasing Monteith on bail.
The defendant was remanded in custody to Maghaberry prison to appear back in court on Thursday, August 8.
