People Before Profit Councillor Shaun Harkin has said his party stands in solidarity with Terex workers as the US company plans to cut 100 jobs in the North.
Said Cllr Harkin: “People Before Profit send our solidarity to Terex workers facing layoffs in Derry and elsewhere across the North.
“We support every worker in Terex and encourage them to seek trade union representation to protect their jobs and improve pay and conditions.
“Seagate workers successfully unionised and this should be an inspiration to all non-unionised Derry workers.
“Unfortunately, Terex are indicative of the type of jobs that the Invest NI and their friends in all the main Stormont parties want to bring here.
“Terex has been supported by Stormont with millions in public money but show no loyalty to their workers when they have the opportunity to maximise profit margins.
“This attitude is exactly why trade union representation is key.
“We challenge the public praise showered on Terex by Sinn Féin and the SDLP as an example of a ‘good employer’ and their calls for even more government support.
“Terex ended all sales and trade with Russia in response to its criminal invasion of Ukraine but refuses demands to do the same with Israel, even as the Gaza genocide plunges humanity to new lows.
“Terex currently makes land moving equipment used to clear Palestinian homes to make way for illegal settlements.
“The Presbyterian Churches of America divested all their funds from any investment portfolio that includes Terex.
“Stormont should not be handing public money to a company complicit with Israel’s starvation of Gaza and slaughter of tens of thousands of Palestinians.
“No one disputes Derry needs jobs, investment in skills and support for local enterprise.
“The Stormont Executive’s economic plan must move beyond a reliance on US corporations who milk public funds, oppose workers rights and put profits before ethics.
“Derry deserves better.
“Solidarity with Terex workers.”
